Former head teacher Jenny Glennie tells Daily Record readers today how her stroke symptoms were dismissed as signs of the menopause.
She felt she was suffering from something more serious but her concerns were swatted away by doctors who thought they knew better.
It later emerged her symptoms were actually early signs she was suffering from a stroke .
Jenny claims she and other women often have their views dismissed .
She told our reporter: “ Women can feel like they’ve not been heard.” And her concerns are backed up by a study by experts at Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.
They found women were far more likely to get misdiagnosed when turning up at hospitals with heart attacks and strokes .
This needs to be addressed by health professionals at all levels – and quickly.
Women are dying and being left with devastating injuries because doctors are dismissing symptoms as signs of the menopause or other women’s issues.
This does not mean Scotland’s NHS doctors are being routinely and deliberately sexist but there is obviously a reluctance to listen to women’s voices and take them seriously.
This is the case across many sectors of society....
